CHANOYU EXPERIENCE
(Tea Ceremony Class)

We teach ongoing weekly classes in the Urasenke tradition of Chanoyu from beginner to advanced levels. Please visit our Chanoyu class and enjoy a first hand experience at being a guest. This is a great introduction for those interested in learning more about weekly tea study. Private tea lessons are also available. ZEN TEA CEREMONY EXPERIENCE
June 20 (10 a.m. to 12 noon, July 2 & August 20 (7 to 9 p.m.) - Fee $75 per session


An introduction to the Zen choreography in making a bowl of tea. Participants will have guided practice in all of the steps necessary to prepare a tasty bowl of matcha, powdered green tea, with an open mind and pure heart.

KAISEKI COOKING WORKSHOP

This summer workshop will include unohanaae (okara & sashimi white fish), unagi tamagoyose (grilled eel egg custard), yasai no gomaae (seasonal vegetable in sesame dressing) and mame gohan (green pea rice). Dashi soup stock will also be made from scratch. The class will be mostly demonstration with some hands-on arranging. Participants will be able to sample the dishes that are prepared during the class. WAGASHI CLASS
(sweet making)

TIME - 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m.
FEE - $35

This traditional wagashi Japanese sweet making class will feature sanshoku ohagi (3 styles of mochi rice and sweet bean paste with aonori [green sea laver], kinako [roasted soy bean flour]) and ukishima, a light refreshing sweet made with sweet bean paste and egg whites. The freshly made sweets and tea will be served at the end of the class. Easy to follow recipes will be provided.


FLOWER ARRANGING FOR TEA
(Chabana Workshop)

Chabana, the art of flower arranging for Chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony), will be the focus of this hands-on workshop. The workshop will include a discussion of the principles of chabana . There will also be an overview of the various styles of vases and baskets that can be used. Participants will enjoy guided practice in making arrangements. Sweets and tea will be served at the end of the workshop.

TANABATA TENSHIN TEA
(Star Festival Tea and Tenshin meal)

TIME - 12 noon - 2 p.m.
FEE - $75

The theme of the tea will be tanabata, the Star Festival, an ancient Chinese legend that has been celebrated in Japan from the 8th century. The legend centers around two stars, Vega, the weaver maiden and Altair, the herdsman. The heavenly king allowed the two lovers to meet once a year on the 7th night of the 7th moon. They would meet on a bridge formed by the outstretched wings of heavenly magpies, but only if it were a clear night. If not. they were forced to wait another year. Traditional seasonal sweets, tea and a tenshin style kaiseki meal will be served.
No prior experience is necessary.


FLOWER ARRANGING FOR TEA
(Chabana Workshop)

Chabana, the art of flower arranging for Chanoyu, will be the focus of this hands-on summer workshop. Chabana has deep roots in the more stylized Ikebana arrangements. This simpler style was used in the tearoom by early tea masters when they invited guests for tea. This workshop will include a discussion of the principles of chabana as well as an overview of the various styles of vases and baskets that can be used. Participants will enjoy guided practice in making arrangements. Sweets and tea will be served at the end of the workshop.


7th S.F. KAGETSU KORYU
(Kagetsu Exchange)



DATE - Sunday, August 30, 2015
TIME -
9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
LOCATION - Nichibeikai Culture Center, 1759 Sutter St., SF
FEE -
$50 (includes a bento lunch)

The days Urasenke kagetsu will include: hira kagetsu, koicha tsuki kagetsu, jiku kazari tsuki kagetsu, setsugekka, yojohan hira kagetsu and mugon nagekomi kagetsu. A bento box lunch and beverage will be provided to all participants. A basic knowledge of furo hira kagetsu is necessary to participate. You may also attend as an observer.
